Beautiful and strong, the Lady Éowyn of Rohan is the niece of King Théoden. Despite her noble blood, Éowyn is not one to shy from combat. Adept with sword and shield, the Lady is quite capable of defending herself. When the men of Rohan leave to do battle in defense of their realm, Éowyn longs to be allowed to take arms and join them, though her gender and office forbid it.

Years before The Lord of the Rings movies were created I had read for the first time The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and each book I have read and reread nearly a dozen times since then. Along with legions of other fans of the trilogy in book form, I had a dread that Tolkien's masterpieces translated to film couldn't possibly live up to the enchantment of the world that Tolkien had created. Not more than a half hour into the 'Fellowship', all fear was gone; The movies are brilliant, and amazingly faithful to Tolkien's Middle Earth and all who inhabit it. :)
Éowyn, courageous, passionate and complex is truly one of my favorite characters. She seeks equality and recognition for all her strengths, regardless of gender, yet her fearless spirit and desire for glory is balanced by a tender caring for those she loves. Her triumph on the battlefield is one of the most thrilling parts of the books and movies to me, and the love and healing that she finds at long last with Faramir is touching and fulfilling. Miranda Otto is perfect in the role and I don't believe the part of Éowyn could have been portrayed by anyone else nearly as well...
